Secret Ingredient for Fish Biryani Recipe

Fish Biryani Ingredients

  • Fish (Katla): 5-6 pieces
  • Basmati rice: 2 cups
  • Potatoes: 3 large
  • Onions (sliced): 2 large
  • Tomato (chopped): 1 large
  • Yogurt: 1/2 cup
  • Ginger-garlic paste: 1 tbsp
  • Green chilies (chopped): 4-5
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder: 1 tsp
  • Whole garam masala (cumin, cinnamon, cardamom): 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves (chopped): 1/2 cup
  • Mint leaves (chopped): 1/4 cup
  • Oil: 1/4 cup
  • Ghee: 2 tbsp
  • Salt: To taste
  • Sugar: 1 tsp
  • Water: 3 cups

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fish

  • Wash the Katla fish pieces and marinate with salt and turmeric powder for 15-20 minutes.

2. Cook the Rice

  • Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  • In a pot, boil 3 cups of water with some salt. Add the soaked rice and cook until it is half-done. Drain and set aside.

3. Fry Fish and Potatoes

  • Heat oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish pieces until golden. Remove and set aside.
  • Cut the potatoes into pieces and fry them in the same oil until golden. Remove and set aside.

4. Fry the Onions

  • In the same oil, fry the sliced onions until they turn golden brown.

5. Prepare the Masala

  • Add ginger-garlic paste, chopped tomato, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and green chilies to the fried onions. Cook the mixture until it is well-cooked and aromatic.

6. Add Fish and Potatoes

  • Add the fried fish and potatoes to the masala mixture. Cook for a few minutes to coat them well.

7. Mix Yogurt and Spices

  • Add yogurt, whole garam masala, and a little sugar to the mixture. Stir well and cook for a couple of minutes.

8. Layer the Biryani

  • In a large pot, heat some oil and ghee. Spread a layer of the cooked rice at the bottom.
  • Add a layer of the fish and masala mixture on top of the rice. Sprinkle coriander and mint leaves.
  • Repeat the layering process, finishing with a layer of rice on top.

9. Cook on Low Heat

  • Cover the pot tightly and cook on low heat (dum) for 20-25 minutes. This helps the flavors blend and the rice to cook fully.

10. Serve Hot

  • Let the biryani rest for a few minutes after cooking. Gently mix the layers before serving. Serve hot with raita or salad.
